Natural Treatment for PCOS

As a naturopath, I see women with polycystic ovarian syndrome daily, and no two people present the same. This guide breaks down what PCOS actually is, why it happens, and the holistic strategies that truly help.

What is PCOS?

PCOS isn’t “just a hormone issue” — it’s a complex metabolic and inflammatory condition that shows up differently for every individual. PCOS is diagnosed when a person has at least 2 of the following 3 conditions;

  • Irregular/absent periods

  • High androgen levels (male sex hormones)

  • Polycystic ovaries (on ultrasound)

    There are typically 4 subtypes of PCOS that are attributed to different causes. Insulin-resistant PCOS, post-pill PCOS, inflammatory PCOS and adrenal PCOS. Working with a Naturopath can help you to determine which subtype of PCOS you have and create a targeted treatment plan accordingly.

Common symptoms of PCOS

Irregular periods, missed periods/ very light periods, long cycles (35 days +), enlarged cystic ovaries on ultrasound, excess body hair growth, weight gain, acne, male pattern hair thinning, infertility, poor blood sugar control (cravings, feeling shaky, excessive hunger and thirst).

PCOS testing options

Typically the process of diagnosis starts with your GP where they may run some blood tests and refer you for a pelvic ultrasound. Naturopath's typically organise functional pathology tests which may involve more comprehensive bloods, cortisol testing and hormone testing across the length of a typical cycle for you.

What does a natural PCOS treatment protocol look like?

Our biggest priority is identifying what the underlying cause of your PCOS really is. Naturopathic treatment is centred around appropriate nutritional and or herbal supplements to improve blood sugar control, replenish nutrients depleted by the oral contraceptive pill (if relevant), reduce inflammation and improve stress management. All while making the right dietary and lifestyle changes. Some commonly used supplements include; myo-inositol, omega-3 fatty acids and zinc. Working with a Naturopath leaves you with a personalised treatment protocol with specific supplements and doses that are clinically effective, so we can get you back into the pattern of regular cyclical periods (Yay!)
