Laxatives can be helpful for occasional constipation or short-term relief, however long-term use may create more problems than it solves. As a Naturopath, I often see people relying on laxatives for months or years without addressing the underlying cause of their digestive issues. While some laxatives are considered relatively safe when used appropriately, chronic use interferes with the body’s natural bowel function over time.

Common Long-Term Side Effects of Laxative Use
Dependence
Frequent use of stimulant laxatives in particular, can cause the bowel to rely on external stimulation to trigger a bowel movement. Over time, this may worsen constipation and make it difficult to go naturally.
Impaired Gut Motility
Chronic laxative use may reduce the bowel’s ability to contract and move stool effectively on its own.
Electrolyte Imbalances
Regular laxative use can lead to losses of important minerals such as potassium and magnesium, contributing to:
Fatigue
Muscle weakness
Cramping
Dizziness
Dehydration
Many laxatives increase water loss through the stool, which may worsen dehydration further contributing to constipation.
Nutrient Malabsorption
Rapid bowel transit time (the speed in which food and waste products move through your digestive tract) may reduce absorption of nutrients and medications over time.
Gut Microbiome Disruption
Overuse may negatively affect beneficial gut bacteria, contributing to bloating, digestive discomfort and ongoing bowel irregularity.
A Naturopathic Perspective
Constipation is often a symptom, not the root problem. Rather than relying solely on laxatives, Naturopathic health care focuses on identifying and addressing underlying causes such as:
Low fibre intake
Poor hydration
Stress
Gut dysbiosis (imbalance of good/bad organisms living in the gut)
Hormonal imbalances
Sedentary lifestyle
Long-term digestion is best supported through:
Fibre-rich whole foods
Adequate hydration
Regular movement
Stress management
Gut microbiome support (testing and correcting the imbalance)
Final Thoughts
Laxatives can absolutely be useful for short-term relief, but they are not designed to be a long-term solution for chronic constipation. Supporting healthy digestive function and treating the underlying cause is key to achieving lasting bowel regularity and overall gut health.
